JUNE 2003 NEWSLETTER

IMPORTANT LAND USE HEARING

The City Council and Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting and public hearing to receive and consider comments about the proposed changes to the Comprehensive Plan and Urban Growth Boundary (UGB), and the Development Code. The public hearing will be held on June 10, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. in the Columbia City Community Hall, 1850 Second Street. The proposed changes to the Comprehensive Plan and Development Code are posted on the City's Web site at www.columbia-center.org/colcity, and are also available for public inspection at the City Hall. Maps showing the proposed changes to the UGB are available for review at the City Hall. This project was funded with a grant from the Department of Land Conservation and Development.

WATER RESERVOIR UPDATE

During the month of May, the old concrete reservoir was demolished and temporary piping was installed at the Ninth and "K" site in preparation for construction of the new reservoir. On May 29th, the contractor began the installation of some of the off-site piping in Ninth and "K" Streets. Construction of the new concrete reservoir will begin during June.

WANT TO GET RID OF METAL JUNK?

Do you have an old refrigerator, freezer, lawn mower or any other metal junk you would like to get rid of? City Hall has the name of someone who will pick up metal junk free of charge every Monday. He will even take old cars as long as you have the title. If you would like to get rid of any metal you may have, please call City Hall. We will take your name, address and phone number and the item to be picked up and pass it along.

PLEASE KEEP THOSE WEEDS CUT!

Weeds and grass cannot exceed 10 inches in height between now and September 30th. In addition, blackberry bushes cannot extend across property lines or into the City's rights-of-ways. Please be a good neighbor and keep your weeds and blackberries under control! To report violations, please call City Hall at (503) 397-4010.

Down By The Riverside: Thanks to our volunteers, Harvard Anderson, Jim Border, Jan and John Burdett, Marian Calnon, Jim Hagan, Barbara Jones, and Richard Ziglinski, our fourth annual "Down By The Riverside" project was a great success! Volunteers and City staff gathered at Datis Park on Friday, May 16th, and removed blackberries and other noxious vegetation, and set posts for a fence and park sign. The project was completed as part of an enhancement, cleanup and appreciation program sponsored by SOLV, a non-profit agency working to preserve this treasure called Oregon. We'd like to extend a very special thank you to everyone who donated their time to this project.

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

Lawns

Avoid over watering. Grass needs water y when it is pale green and it stays flat after it has been stepped on.

Water slowly until the lawn is soggy. Use a hose; sprinklers allow the water to evaporate before the soil can absorb it. If you must use a sprinkler, use one that makes large drops of water.

Water in the morning. Sun and wind can evaporate much of the water before it reaches the soil.

Let the grass grow higher in dry weather – it saves burning and saves water.

Gardens

Before planting, add compost or a mulch to the garden. Compost absorbs water and fertilizes plants. Mulches also absorb water and prevent the spread of weeds.
